1941 : The last person to be executed at the Tower of London for espionage, was Corporal Josef Jakobs. He was executed by firing squad at at 7:12am.
1945 : Japan surrendered in the World War II, with a broadcast by Hirohito, the Japanese Emperor. Following the surrender broadcast, Korea gained Independence from the Empire of Japan.
1947 : India gained Independence from British rule, and joined the Commonwealth of Nations, after almost 190 years of British company and crown rule.

1952 : Lynmouth Flood : A flash flood from a storm with heavy rainfall, flooded the village of Lynmouth, in England, resulting in the deaths of 34 people.
1963 : The last man to be hanged in Scotland, occurred with the execution of Henry John Burnett, a murderer.
1964 : Melinda Gates, the American businesswoman, philanthropist, and wife of Bill Gates, was born Melinda Ann French, in Dallas, Texas, USA. She is a former computer scientist and general manager from Microsoft. 1969 : The WOODSTOCK Music & Art Fair opened in Bethel, New York. The music festival was held over 3 days, until the 18th of August, on Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in Bethel, 65 kilometres (40 miles) southwest of the town of Woodstock. The Woodstock Rock Festival attracted an audience of over 400,000 people, to see 32 acts performing on the outdoor stage, in irregular rain.
