1892 : Otto Messmer the American cartoonist and animator, was born in Union City, New Jersey, USA. He is best known for his work on Felix the Cat cartoons and comics (died in 1983 aged 91).
1900s / 20th century history on the 16th of August
1906 : Valparaíso earthquake hit Valparaíso Region in central Chile, with a magnitude of 8.2 Mw, resulting in the deaths of 3,882 people.
1920 : Charles Bukowski, the German-American writer, was born Heinrich Karl Bukowski, in Andernach, Prussia, Germany (died in 1994 aged 73).
1930 : Fiddlesticks animated colour cartoon was released by Ub Iwerks.
1940 : Bruce Beresford, the Australian film director was born in Paddington, New South Wales, Australia. He is best known as the director of the movies : Breaker Morant (1980), Tender Mercies (1983), Crimes of the Heart (1986) and Driving Miss Daisy (1989).

1958 : Madonna, the American singer-songwriter and actress, was born Madonna Louise Ciccone, in Bay City, Michigan, USA. official website : Madonna.com
1962 : Steve Carell, the American actor and comedian, was born in Concord, Massachusetts, USA.
1975 : Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam symbolically handed over land to the Gurindji people, after the 7 year year Gurindji strike, also known as Wave Hill walk-off. This was a landmark event for Indigenous land rights in the history of Australia, which was commemorated in Paul Kelly’s 1991 song “From Little Things Big Things Grow”.
1977 : Elvis Presley, the American singer and actor died from a cardiac arrest, aged 42 (born in 1935).
1987 : Northwest Airlines Flight 255 crashed shortly after takeoff in Detroit, Michigan, USA. The crash resulted in the deaths of 154 of the 155 on board the aircraft, plus 2 people on the ground. A girl aged 4 was the the only survivor of the crash.
1989 : Solar storms stopped the stock market in Toronto, when computers crashed, during a very large X20 solar particle event. The Toronto Stock Exchange’s computer microchips were affected, which resulted in forcing a halt to trading.
1991 : Indian Airlines Flight 257 Boeing 737 crashed while approaching Imphal Airport in India. The crash resulted in the deaths of all 69 people on board.
2000s / 21st century history on the 16th of August
2005 : West Caribbean Airways Flight 708 crashed in Venezuela, resulting in the death of all 160 people on board the McDonnell Douglas MD-82 aircraft.
2008 : Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago was topped off at 423 metres (1,389 feet), making it the 7th tallest building in the world, at the time. Location : 401 N. Wabash Ave.,Chicago, Illinois, United States
2018 : Aretha Franklin, the American singer-songwriter, died from a malignant pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor, aged 76 (born in 1942). official website : ArethaFranklin.net
2019 : Peter Fonda, the American actor, died from respiratory failure caused by lung cancer, aged 79 (born in 1940).
2020 :The August Complex fire in California started after lightning strikes, and burnt for 3 months, until the 12th November. The massive wildfire burnt over 1 million acres (over 400,000 hectares) of land, destroying 935 buildings, and killing 1 firefighter.
