1835 : Melbourne in Australia, was founded by European settlers. Aboriginal Australians were already living in the Melbourne area for the previous 40,000 years (approximately). 1916 : Ernest Shackleton completed his rescue of all his men which were stranded in Antarctica, on Elephant Island.

1883 : The eruption of the Krakatoa volcano in in the in Indonesia, destroyed 70% of the island of Krakatoa, and the surrounding archipelago. The eruption resulted in the deaths of 36,417 people. It was one of the deadliest and most destructive volcanic events in recorded history. The explosions were heard over 3,000 kilometres (1,865 miles) away in Perth, Western Australia.
1890 : Man Ray, the American visual artist, was born Emmanuel Radnitzky in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA (died in 1976 aged 86).

1906 : Albert Sabin, the Polish-American medical researcher, was born in Białystok, Russian Empire, now known as Poland (died in 1993 aged 86). He is best known for developing the polio vaccine, which almost fully eradicated the disease around the world.
1910 : Mother Teresa, aka Saint Teresa of Calcutta, the Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun, was born Anjezë Gonxhe, in Üsküp, Kosovo Vilayet, Ottoman Empire, now known as Skopje, North Macedonia (died in 1997 aged 87).
