1500s / 16th century history on the 10th of August
1519 : Ferdinand Magellan's 5 ships set sail from Seville to circumnavigate the globe. The Basque 2nd in command Juan Sebastián Elcano completed the expedition after Magellan's death in the Philippines.
1173 : Construction of the Tower of Pisa started. The Italian bell tower was originally known as the Cathedral of Pisa, and later became known as the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Construction took 2 centuries until completion.
1782 : George Washington ordered the creation of the Badge of Military Merit to honor soldiers wounded in battle. It was later renamed the Purple Heart.
1693 : Dom Perignon invented Champagne. This date is traditionally regarded as the day champagne was invented, and Dom Perignon is credited as the innovator for developing the techniques that were used to perfect sparkling wine.
1492 : Christopher Columbus departed from Palos de la Frontera, in Spain, with 3 ships, on his 1st voyage. He sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, via the Canary Islands, to Cuba and Hispaniola.
