1693 : Dom Perignon invented Champagne. This date is traditionally regarded as the day champagne was invented, and Dom Perignon is credited as the innovator for developing the techniques that were used to perfect sparkling wine.

1783 : Mount Asama erupted in Japan, resulting in the deaths of about 1,400 people. The volcano eruption also caused a famine, which subsequently resulted in the deaths of another 20,000 people.
