1905 : Walter Zapp, the Baltic – German camera inventor, was born in Riga, in the Russian Empire, now known as Latvia (died in 2003 aged 87).He is best known for inventing the Minox subminiature camera. Official website : Minox.com
1907 : Edvard Grieg, Norwegian pianist and composer, died aged 64 (born in 1843).
1923 : USS Shenandoah ZR-1 airship maiden flight. It later became the first airship to make a crossing of North America.
1928 : Dick York, the American actor, was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA (died in 1992 aged 63). He was best known as the first Darrin Stephens on the Bewitched television series, from 1964 to 1969.
1937 : Dawn Fraser (AC, MBE), the Australian swimmer, was born in Balmain, New South Wales, Australia.
1949 : Darryl Cotton, the Australian singer-songwriter and television host, was born in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia (died in 2012 aged 62).

1971 : Alaska Airlines Flight 1866 crashed into a mountain near Juneau, Alaska, resulting in the deaths of all 111 people on board the Boeing 727-193 aircraft.

1972 : The Price Is Right premiered on television, on CBS. After 46 years, it became the longest running game show on American television in 2018.
