1658 : Oliver Cromwell, the English general and statesman, died from malaria and kidney stone disease, aged 59 (born in 1599).
1666 : The Royal Exchange burnt down during the Great Fire of London. It was rebuilt, and opened in 1669, and burnt down again in 1838. The Royal Exchange as it still stands today was rebuilt and opened in 1844. Official website : TheRoyalExchange.co.uk

1935 : Sir Malcolm Campbell became the 1st person to drive over 300 miles per hour in an automobile, averaging a top speed of 301.3 miles per hour (484 km/h) in the Campbell-Railton Blue Bird, on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA.
1942 : Al Jardine, the American singer and songwriter, was born Alan Charles Jardine in Lima, Ohio, USA. He is best known as the rhythm guitarist and co-founder of the Beach Boys rock band. 1944 : Anne Frank and her family were placed on the last transport train from the Westerbork transit camp to the Auschwitz concentration camp, during the Holocaust.
1950 : Giuseppe Antonio “Nino” Farina became the 1st Formula One Drivers’ champion, after he won the 1950 Italian Grand Prix.

1967 : Sweden’s traffic changed from driving on the left side to driving on the right side overnight. Högertrafikomläggningen aka Dagen H (H Day) as it was known, which meant the right-hand traffic reorganization.

2000s / 21st century history on the 3rd of September
2004 : Beslan school siege in North Ossetia-Alania (Russia) resulted in the deaths of 334 people which included 186 children. Approximately 783 people were injured during the hostage crisis, and 31 of the 32 terrorists were killed.
2007 : Steve Fossett, the American adventurer, died when he crashed a plane he was flying, aged 63 (born in 1944).
2017 : North Korea conducted its 6th nuclear test, which was its most powerful test conducted.
