1666 : The Great Fire of London ended, after starting 4 days earlier, resulting in the destruction of over 13,000 homes and buildings.
1698 : A beard tax was imposed by Tsar Peter I of Russia, to Westernize his nobility. The tax was imposed on all men except the clergy and peasantry.

1847 : Jesse James, the American outlaw, was born near Kearney, Missouri, USA (died in 1882 aged 34).
1882 : The United States Labor Day parade was held for the first time, in New York City.
1900s / 20th century history on the 5th of September
1934 : Sidney Myer, the Russian-Australian founder of Myer department store, died aged 56 (born in 1878). Sidney Myer (Myer Holdings Ltd) opened the first of 2 stores in 1900, in Bendigo, Victoria, followed by Myer in Melbourne in 1911. 55 more stores were opened in Australia over the following 120 years (total of 58 stores as of 2022). Myer is known for being Australia’s largest chain of department stores, based upon revenue and store count. Myer Emporium Ltd was listed on the Melbourne Stock Exchange in 1925 (ASX: MYR). 1940 : Raquel Welch, the American actress, was born Jo Raquel Tejada, in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
1946 : Freddie Mercury, the English singer-songwriter, was born Farrokh Bulsara, in Stone Town, Zanzibar, which is now known as Kenya, in Eastern Africa (died in 1991 aged 45). He was best known as the lead singer of the rock band Queen. Official website : QueenOnline.com
1951 : Michael Keaton, the American actor, was born in Kennedy Township, Pennsylvania, USA.
1960 : Muhammad Ali (originally Cassius Clay) won the gold medal in the light heavyweight boxing competition, at the Olympic Games in Rome.
1972 : The Munich massacre attack during the 1972 Summer Olympics, by the Palestinian terrorist group known as “Black September”. They killed 11 Israeli athletes, which they held as hostages, at the Munich Olympic Games.

1975 : An assassination attempt was made on U.S. President Gerald Ford, by Lynette Fromme, in Sacramento, California.
1977 : NASA launched the Voyager 1 spacecraft.
1980 : The world’s longest highway tunnel opened in Switzerland. The Gotthard Road Tunnel from Göschenen to Airolo is 16.32 km (10.14 miles) in length.
1984 : The Space Shuttle Discovery landed after its maiden voyage.
1984 : Western Australia became the last Australian state to abolish capital punishment.
1997 : Mother Teresa, the Albanian-Indian Catholic nun, died aged 87 (born in 1910).
1999 : Allen Funt, the American television presenter and founder of Candid Camera, died aged 84 (born in 1914).
