868 : DiAMOND SūTRA was printed in China, making it the oldest known dated printed book in the world. It is a Buddhist sutra from the perfection of wisdom sutras. A copy of the Tang-dynasty Chinese version was found by Daoist monk Wang Yuanlu, among the Dunhuang manuscripts.
1800s / 19th century history on the 11th of May
1813 : William Lawson, Gregory Blaxland and William Wentworth discovered a route across the Blue Mountains, which opened up inland Australia for settlement.
1833 : The Lady of the Lake hit an iceberg and sank near Newfoundland, resulting in a loss of up to 265 passengers and crew members.

1934 : Dust storm swept from Great Plains across Eastern states : A massive storm sent millions of tons of topsoil flying from across the parched Great Plains region of the United States on the 11th May 1934, as far east as New York, Boston and Atlanta.

1985 : Chester Gould the American cartoonist died aged 84. (born in 1900). He was best known as the creator of the Dick Tracy comic strip, which he wrote and illustrated from 1931 to 1977.
1996 : ValuJet Airlines Flight 592 McDonnell Douglas DC-9 crashed in the Florida Everglades in USA, only 10 minutes after take off from Miami, due to a fire that started in the cargo hold, resulting in the death of all 110 on board.
1997 : Deep Blue, the chess-playing supercomputer became the first computer to beat a world-champion chess player, after it defeated Garry Kasparov.
1998 : India conducted 3 underground atomic tests in Pokhran.

2011 : Lorca earthquake in Spain killed 9 people, and injured 403 others.
2014 : Stade Tata Raphaël disaster, a football match stampede in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Africa, resulted in the death of 15 people, and another 24 with injuries, when tear gas was thrown into soccer stands by police officers.
2020 : Jerry Stiller the American actor died aged 92 (born in 1927).
