AUGUST 6th ~ This Day in History video by History.com ~  1945 : American bomber dropped atomic bomb on Hiroshima | & more about history on this day in the video… An American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, dropped the world’s first atom bomb, over the city of Hiroshima in Japan. Approximately 80,000 people were killed as a direct result of the blast, and 35,000 were injured. About another 60,000 people died by the end of the year from the effects of the fallout.

1787 ~ Sixty proof sheets of the Constitution of the United States were delivered to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

1806 ~ Francis II, the last Holy Roman Emperor abdicated, ending the Holy Roman Empire.

1819 ~ Norwich University was founded in Vermont as the 1st private military school in the United States.

1845 ~ The Russian Geographical Society was founded in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

1890 ~ Murderer William Kemmler was the first person to be executed by electric chair, at Auburn Prison in New York.

1914 ~ Serbia declared war on Germany, and Austria declared war on Russia.  (World War I)

1926 ~ Gertrude Ederle became the 1st woman to swim across the English Channel.

1926 ~ The Warner Bros.’ Vitaphone system premiered with the movie Don Juan starring John Barrymore,  in New York, New York.

1945 ~ Hiroshima, Japan was devastated when the atomic bomb named Little Boy was dropped by the United States B-29 Enola Gay. About 70,000 people were killed instantly, and tens of thousands died in subsequent years from burns and radiation poisoning. (World War II)
