April 29th ~ This Day in History video by History.com ~ 2004 : The National World War II monument opened in Washington, D.C. to thousands of visitors on the 29th April 2004, providing overdue recognition for the 16 million U.S. men and women who served in the war. The memorial is located on 7.4 acres on the former site of the Rainbow Pool at the National Mall between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. 28th APRiL ~ HISTORY ON THIS DAY

April 28th ~ This Day in History video by History.com ~ 1945: Benito Mussolini was executed : Benito Mussolini, and his mistress, Clara Petacci, were shot by Italian partisans on the 28th April 1945, when they attempted to flee to Switzerland. The 61-year-old deposed former dictator of Italy was established by his German allies as the figurehead of the puppet government in northern Italy during the German occupation near the close of the war. As the Allies fought their way up the Italian peninsula, Mussolini didn’t want to fall into the hands of the British, the Americans, and the communist partisans, who would try him as a war criminal, so he tried to escape to a neutral country. He and his mistress made it to the Swiss border, but his guards had crossed over to the partisan side. Mussolini disguised himself in a Luftwaffe coat and helmet, to slip into Austria with some German soldiers, but discovered by partisans and shot, their bodies then transported by truck to Milan, where they were hung upside down and displayed publicly for revilement by the masses. | & more about history on this day in the video…

26th APRiL ~ HISTORY ON THIS DAY

April 26th ~ This Day in History video by History.com ~ 1954 : Polio vaccine trials began : The Salk polio vaccine field trials, involving 1.8 million children, began at the Franklin Sherman Elementary School in McLean, Virginia on the 26th April 1954. Children in the United States, Canada and Finland participated in the trials, which used the now-standard double-blind method, for the first time,  whereby neither the patient nor attending doctor knew if the inoculation was the vaccine or a placebo. April 25th ~ This Day in History video by History.com ~ 1983: Andropov wrote to U.S. student : The Soviet Union released a letter on the 25th April 1983,  that Russian leader Yuri Andropov wrote to Samantha Smith, an American 5th-grader from Manchester, Maine, inviting her to visit his country. Andropov’s letter came in response to a note Samantha Smith had sent him in December 1982, asking if the Soviets were planning to start a nuclear war.
