1934 : Sidney Myer, the Russian-Australian founder of Myer department store, died aged 56 (born in 1878). Sidney Myer (Myer Holdings Ltd) opened the first of 2 stores in 1900, in Bendigo, Victoria, followed by Myer in Melbourne in 1911. 55 more stores were opened in Australia over the following 120 years (total of 58 stores as of 2022). Myer is known for being Australia’s largest chain of department stores, based upon revenue and store count. Myer Emporium Ltd was listed on the Melbourne Stock Exchange in 1925 (ASX: MYR). 1940 : Raquel Welch, the American actress, was born Jo Raquel Tejada, in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
