1848 : The 1st known photojournalism photograph was taken, when the June Days uprising staged by French workers in Paris, France, was photographed. The black and white photograph featured a street scene showing barricades on rue Saint-Maur during the uprising.

1874 : ROSE O’NEiLL the American cartoonist, illustrator, artist, and writer was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, USA (died in 1944 aged 69). She was best known for creating the Kewpie, which earned her international fame and fortune, as it became the best known cartoon character in the world, until Mickey Mouse arrived. Rose O’Neill became the highest-paid and best-known female commercial illustrator in America.

1900 : The Dunhuang manuscripts were discovered in the Mogao Caves of Dunhuang, in China, by Taoist monk Wang Yuanlu. The cache of ancient texts were of great historical and religious significance.
1903 : GEORGE ORWELL the British novelist was born Eric Arthur Blair in Motihari, Bengal Presidency, British India (died in 1950 aged 46). He was best known for the novels Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949).
1925 : JUNE LOCKHART the American actress was born in New York City, USA. She is best known as Dr. Maureen Robinson and the mother in the Lost in Space television series from 1965 to 1968.
