1906 : Anton Karas the Austrian zither player and composer was born in Vienna (died in 1985 aged 78). He is internationally known for creating the 1948 film soundtrack to The Third Man, which was voted the greatest British film of all time, by the British Film Institute.
1907 : Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. staged his 1st Follies, in New York City, on the roof of the New York Theater.
1911 : The North Pacific Fur Seal Convention of 1911 was signed by the United States, UK, Japan, and Russia, to ban open-water seal hunting, which made it the first international treaty to address wildlife preservation issues.
1928 : Sliced bread was sold for the 1st time, by the Chillicothe Baking Company in Chillicothe, Missouri, on Otto Frederick Rohwedder the inventor’s 48th birthday.

1946 : Howard Hughes crashed his XF-11 reconnaissance aircraft prototype in a Beverly Hills neighbourhood, where he clipped 2 houses and destroyed 1 house, but he survived the crash.
1954 : Elvis Presley’s radio debut on WHBQ Memphis, when they played That’s All Right, his first recording, which was recorded 2 days earlier, at for Sun Records on the 5th July.
1959 : Venus occulted the star Regulus in a rare event, which was used to determine the diameter of Venus and the structure of its atmosphere.
1978 : The Solomon Islands became independent from the United Kingdom.
1983 : Samantha Smith the 11 year old US schoolgirl flew to the Soviet Union, at the invitation of Secretary General Yuri Andropov, during the Cold War.
1985 : Boris Becker became the youngest player to ever to win Wimbledon, when he was aged 17.
1992 : Topless in public : The New York Court of Appeals ruled that women have the same right as men to go topless in public.
2000s / 21st century history on the 7th of July
2003 : NASA Mars Exploration Rover–B aka Opportunity rover MER-B was launched into space aboard a Delta II rocket.
2005 : Four explosions at London’s transport system killed 56 people, which included the 4 suicide bombers, and injured more than 700 other people.
2006 : Syd Barrett the English singer-songwriter and musician died from pancreatic cancer, aged 60 (born in 1946). He is best known for co-founding the Pink Floyd the rock band in 1965, which he left in 1968. Official website : SydBarrett.com
2007 : The 1st Live Earth benefit concert was held around the world, in 11 different locations.
2012 : Krasnodar Krai floods in Russia killed 171 people.
