1800s / 19th century history on the 27th of June
1880 : Helen Keller the American author and disability rights advocate was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, USA (died in 1968 aged 87).
1895 : The 1st U.S. passenger train to use electric locomotives, with the start of Baltimore and Ohio Railroad’s Royal Blue running from Washington, D.C., to New York City, USA.
1898 : The 1st SOLO CiRCUMNAVATiON of the GLOBE was completed by sailor JOSHUA SLOCUM, with his round trip journey from Briar Island, Nova Scotia. He was the first person to sail single-handedly around the world. In 1899 he published his epic voyage, Sailing Alone Around the World, and the book won him widespread fame. In 1909 Joshua Slocum aged 65 set sail on a usual winter voyage to the West Indies, and was never heard from again, and was declared legally dead in 1924.
1900s / 20th century history on the 27th of June
1950 : President Harry S. Truman ordered U.S. forces to Korea. He announced that he was ordering U.S. air and naval forces to South Korea to aid the democratic nation in repulsing an invasion by communist North Korea. The United States was undertaking the major military operation to enforce a United Nations resolution to end hostilities, and stem the spread of communism in Asia. In addition to ordering U.S. forces to Korea, Truman deployed the U.S. 7th Fleet to Formosa (Taiwan) to guard against invasion by communist China, and ordered an acceleration of military aid to French forces fighting communist guerrillas in Vietnam.
1980 : Itavia Flight 870 was shot down by a missile and crashed into the Tyrrhenian Sea, while flying from Bologna to Palermo, in Italy, resulting in the deaths of all 81 people on board.
1982 : Space Shuttle Columbia was launched on its final research and development flight mission, known as STS-4, from the Kennedy Space Center.
1984 : Khloé Kardashian the American media personality was born in Los Angeles, California, USA.
2000s / 21st century history on the 27th of June
2001 : Jack Lemmon the American actor died of bladder cancer, aged 76 (b. 1925).
2002 : John Entwistle the English singer-songwriter, and bass guitarist died due to a heart attack induced by cocaine, aged 57 (born in 1944). He was best known as the bassist for The Who rock band.
2007 : Tony Blair resigned as British Prime Minister, after holding the position for 10 years, since 1997. He was succeeded by his Chancellor, Gordon Brown.
2013 : NASA launched the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, which is a space probe that observes the Sun.
2015 : New Taipei water park fire at Formosa Fun Coast, a recreational water park in Taiwan, killed 15 people and burnt 497 other people. The 40 second fire was caused by the staff at an outdoor “colour powder party” when they sprayed clouds of corn starch towards the participants, which ignited.
2018 : Joe Jackson the American talent manager, and father of Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson, died of terminal pancreatic cancer, aged 89 (born in 1928).
2017 : Cyberattacks on Ukraine began in a series of powerful cyberattacks which used the Petya malware to target websites of Ukrainian organizations, and also other websites around the world with Ukrainian connections.
