The first YouTube video was uploaded by Jawed Karim at 8.27pm on Saturday the 23rd April 2005. (video time = 18 second video)

Transcript : “Alright, so here we are in front of the elephants. The cool thing about these guys is that they have really, really, really long trunks, and that’s, that’s cool. And that’s pretty much all there is to say.” ~ Jawed Karim

The 18 second video was filmed at San Diego Zoo by Jawed’s high school friend Yakov Lapitsky (who later become an engineering professor). The video has been viewed over 19 million times in 10 years. Jawed Karim also started the first YouTube channel, in order to upload the first video, but never posted another video on this account :

Jawed Karim is a Bangladeshi-German internet entrepreneur, best known as the co-founder of YouTube with Chad Hurley and Steve Chen. Jawed Karim was also one of the first engineers at PayPal, and designed and implemented many of the core components of PayPal, including the real-time anti-fraud system. Jawed holds degrees in computer science from Stanford University and the University of Illinois.

Jawed sold YouTube to Google in 2006, for $1.65 billion (US), and Jawed received 137,443 shares of stock for the transaction, which was worth approximately $64 million at the time.

In 2008, Jawed launched a venture fund called Youniversity Ventures, with the aim of helping current and former university students to develop and launch their business ideas.
