1915 : LES PAUL the American guitarist and inventor was born Lester William Polsfuss in Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA (died in 2009 aged 94). He is one of the pioneers of the solid-body electric guitar, and his Log prototype, was the inspiration for the creation of the Gibson Les Paul electric guitar. 1968 : A national day of mourning following the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy was declared, by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. RFK was assassinated 4 days earlier, on the 5th of June.
1972 : Deadliest flash flood in American history, when a dam in the Black Hills of South Dakota burst after severe rainfall, which created a flood that killed 238 people, and caused a damage bill of $160 million.
1973 : Secretariat won the U.S. Triple Crown with a spectacular victory at the Belmont Stakes, becoming the first horse since Citation in 1948 to win America’s Triple Crown; the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes. Secretariat was ridden by Ron Turcotte, and completed the 1.5-mile race in 2 minutes and 24 seconds, a dirt-track record for that distance.
1978 : The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints opened its priesthood to black men, after they were excluded for the previous 148 years.
1979 : The Ghost Train fire at Luna Park Sydney, in Australia, killed 7 people.
