1842 : The Webster–Ashburton Treaty was signed, which established the United States–Canada border east of the Rocky Mountains.
1854 : HENRY DAViD THOREAU published WALDEN, the American book which was first published as Walden; or, Life in the Woods. The book is about simple living in natural surroundings, personal declaration of independence, social experiment, voyage of spiritual discovery, satire, and a manual for self-reliance. It details Thoreau’s experiences over 2 years, 2 months, and 2 days in a cabin he built near Walden Pond, amidst woodland owned by his friend and mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson, near Concord, Massachusetts. The book compresses the time into 1 year, and used passages of 4 seasons to symbolize human development. He immersed himself in nature in a hope to gain a more objective understanding of society through personal introspection, while simple living, self-sufficiency, inspired by transcendentalist philosophy.

1945 : Nagasaki was devastated by an atomic bomb named Fat Man was dropped by the United States B-29 Bockscar. The bomb killed 39,000 people outright.
