1824 : Ludwig van Beethoven‘s world premier of the Ninth Symphony in Vienna, Austria.

1840 : The Great Natchez Tornado hit Natchez in Mississippi, and killed 317 people. It was recorded as the 2nd deadliest tornado in United States history.

1846 : America’s oldest surviving weekly newspaper, The Cambridge Chronicle was published for the 1st time in Cambridge in Massachusetts, USA.

1864 : The world’s oldest surviving clipper ship, the City of Adelaide was launched by William Pile, Hay and Co. in Sunderland, England, to transport passengers and goods to Australia.

1895 : The Popov lightning detector was demonstrated by Russian scientist Alexander Stepanovich, to the Russian Physical and Chemical Society, in Saint Petersburg, Russia. His invention was a primitive radio receiver. The anniversary of the event is celebrated as Radio Day in parts of the former Soviet Union.

1901 : Gary Cooper the American actor was born Frank James Cooper in Helena, Montana, USA (died in 1961 aged 60).

1930 : Salmas earthquake hit north-western Iran and south-eastern Turkey with a maximum Mercalli violent intensity, resulting in the death of up 3,000 people.

1986 : Canadian Patrick Morrow became the 1st person to climb all of the Seven Summits.
