1400s / the 15th century on the 6th of March

1475 : MiCHELANGELO the Italian painter and sculptor was born Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni in Caprese near Arezzo, Republic of Florence in present-day Tuscany, in Italy (died in 1564 aged 88). Michelangelo was also an architect and poet of the High Renaissance. Michelangelo is best-known for sculpting the Pietà and David statues, painting the scenes from Genesis on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, and The Last Judgment on the altar wall.

1500s / the 16th century on the 6th of March

1521 ~ Ferdinand Magellan arrived at Guam.

1600s / the 17th century on the 6th of March

1665 : Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society was first published, by the 1st joint Secretary of the Royal Society, Henry Oldenburg. It was the first journal in the world exclusively devoted to science, and also the world’s longest running scientific journal.

1700s / the 18th century on the 6th of March

1788 ~ The First Fleet arrived at Norfolk Island, to found a convict settlement.

1800s / the 19th century on the 6th of March

1834 ~ York in Upper Canada was incorporated as Toronto.

1836 : The BATTLE of the ALAMO ended after a 13 day siege by an army of 3,000 Mexican troops against 187 Texas volunteers, including frontiersman Davy Crockett and colonel Jim Bowie defending the Alamo. The Mexican troops surrounded the Alamo Mission killing the Texians and Tejanos, and captured the fort, during the Texas Revolution.

1869 ~ The 1st periodic table was presented by Dmitri Mendeleev, to the Russian Chemical Society.

1882 ~ The Serbian kingdom was re-founded.

1899 ~ Aspirin was registered as a trademark by Bayer, at the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin, Germany.

1900s / the 20th century on the 6th of March

1902 ~ Real Madrid C.F. was founded. Real Madrid Club de Fútbol is a Spanish professional football club based in Madrid.

1930 ~ International Unemployment Day demonstrations were globally initiated by Communist International (Comintern) an international organization that advocated world communism.

1933 ~ President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared a bank holiday, which closed all U.S. banks and froze all financial transactions, during the Great Depression.

1943 : FREEDOM from WANT art by Norman Rockwell was published, also know as The Thanksgiving Picture or I’ll Be Home for Christmas, in The Saturday Evening Post. The artwork was an oil painting which was published as part of the Four Freedoms series, with a matching essay by Carlos Bulosan.

1944 : Dame Kiri Te Kanawa the New Zealand opera singer was born Claire Mary Teresa Rawstron in Gisborne, New Zealand. She retired after her last performance in Ballarat, Australia in 2016.

1946 : David Gilmour the English guitarist in Pink Floyd was born in Cambridge, England.

1947 : Kiki Dee the English singer was born Pauline Matthews in Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire, England. She is best known for her 1974 hit song “I’ve Got the Music in Me” and her 1976 song duet “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” with Elton John, which was number 1 on UK and USA charts.
