1046 : NASiR KHURSRAW the Persian poet began his 7 year journey through the Middle East, which was later described in his book of travels Safarnama. Nasir was also a philosopher, Isma’ili scholar, and one of the greatest writers in Persian literature.
1600s / 17th century history on the 5th of March
1616 : NiCOLAUS COPERNiCUS’s BOOK was banned. The Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres by Nicolaus Copernicus was added to the Index of Forbidden Books, 73 years after it was first published in 1543.
1800s / 19th century history on the 5th of March
1836 : SAMUEL COLT patented the 1st production model revolver, the .34-caliber handgun.
1850 : The Britannia Bridge was opened, linking the island of Anglesey and the mainland of Wales, across the Menai Strait.
1872 : GEORGE WESTiNGHOUSE patented the railway air brake, a power braking system using compressed air. Modern trains rely upon a fail-safe air brake system that is based upon the design patented by George Westinghouse.

1946 : The “Iron Curtain” phrase was coined by Winston Churchill in his speech at Westminster College, Missouri, during the Cold War.
1946 : MURRAY HEAD the English singer was born in London, England. He is also an actor in 14 films, including a starring role in the 1971 film Sunday Bloody Sunday. Murray head is best known for his hit songs Superstar (1970) in Jesus Christ Superstar rock opera, and One Night in Bangkok (1984) in Chess the musical.
1948 : EDDY GRANT the Guyanese-British singer was born in Plaisance, British Guiana. He is also a songwriter, musician, and pioneer of ringbang (Caribbean fusion of music genres). Eddy Grant is best known for his platinum single Electric Avenue in 1983.
1953 : Joseph Stalin died due to a cerebral haemorrhage, in Moscow. He was the longest serving leader of the Soviet Union.
1958 : ANDY GiBB the English-Australian singer was born in Stretford, England (died in 1988 aged 30). He was also a songwriter, actor and younger brother of the Bee Gees Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb. Andy Gibb had 12 songs in the international charts in the late 1970s, with 3 number one hits in the United Sates, 6 reached the Top 10 (USA). He was best known for the songs “I Just Want to Be Your Everything” (1977), “Love Is Thicker Than Water” (1977), and “Shadow Dancing”(1978). Andy’s success ended early due to drug addiction and depression.
1963 : PATSY CLiNE the American country music star died in aplane crash, along with Hawkshaw Hawkins, Cowboy Copas , and their pilot Randy Hughes was also killed in a plane crash in Camden, Tennessee, USA.
1970 : The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons was put into effect after ratification by 43 nations.
1974 : EVA MENDES the American model and actress was born in Miami, Florida, USA. She was been in 30 films : Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror (1998), Urban Legends: Final Cut (2000), Training Day (2001), 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), Hitch (2005), Ghost Rider (2007), The Spirit (2008), We Own the Night (2007), Bad Lieutenant (2009), Last Night (2010), The Place Beyond the Pines (2012). Out of Time (2003), The Women (2008), The Other Guys (2010), Girl in Progress (2012) and 15 other movies.
1978 : The Landsat 3 was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
1979 : Soviet probes Venera 11 and 12 and the German-American solar satellite Helios II were all hit by off the scale gamma rays, which led to the discovery of soft gamma repeaters.
1981 : The ZX81 British home computer was launched by Sinclair Research. Over 1.5 million units of this pioneering home computer were sold around the world.
1982 : Soviet probe Venera 14 landed on Venus.
