1886 : The 1st transcontinental train trip across Canada departed from Montreal, in Quebec, on its first journey to Port Moody, in British Columbia. The train arrived there within 4 days, on the 4th of July.

1908 : The TUNGUSKA EVENT : The LARGEST iMPACT event on Earth. It resulted in a massive explosion over Eastern Siberia, in Russia, which flattened approximately 80 million trees in a forest area of  2,150 km2 (830 sq miles). The explosion was said to be the air burst of a stony meteoroid about 100 metres (330 feet) in size, while it was travelling about 5 to 10 kilometres (3 to 6 miles) from the surface of Earth, where it most likely disintegrated at that altitude, due to no impact crater being found.

1912 : Canada’s deadliest tornado hit Regina, in Saskatchewan, resulting in the deaths of 28 people.

1936 : Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell was published, and became one of the best-selling novels of all time. Margaret Mitchell was forced to quit her job as a reporter at the Atlanta Journal in 1926, to recover from a series of physical injuries. With a lot of time on her hands, she grew restless, and started telling the story of an Atlanta belle named Pansy O’Hara on her Remington typewriter, in a cramped one-bedroom apartment with her husband. The book was the basis for a 1939 movie.

1937 : The world’s first emergency telephone number was introduced, in London. 999 was the first official emergency telephone number used, followed by 25 other countries.

1944 : Glenn Shorrock (AM) the English-Australian singer-songwriter was born in Chatham, Kent, England. 1953 : The first Chevrolet Corvette rolled off the assembly line in Michigan, USA, at the athe factory in Flint.

1956 : Grand Canyon mid-air collision in Arizona, USA : TWA Super Constellation and United Airlines DC-7 aircrafts collided over the Grand Canyon, USA. Both planes plunged to the ground at great speed, with the DC-7 plummeting to the ground at up to 770 km/h (480 mph). The crash killed all 128 people on board both airliners.

1959 : United States Air Force F-100 Super Sabre crashed into a school in Okinawa, Japan. The aircraft became uncontrollable during a training or test flight from Kadena Air Base, and crashed into Miyamori Elementary School and neighbouring houses, near the city of Ishikawa. The crash killed 11 students and 6 people in the surrounding neighbourhood, which left a total of 210 people injured, of which included 156 students.

2009 : Yemenia Flight 626 Airbus A310-300 crashed into the Indian Ocean on approach to Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport, near Comoros. The crashed killed 152 of the 153 people on board, leaving only 1 survivor, a 14-year-old girl named Bahia Bakari, who had no life vest and could barely swim, held on to a piece of aircraft wreckage in heavy seas in complete darkness for more than 9 hours, before she was rescued.
