1897 : Discovery of the electron as a subatomic particle by J. J. Thomson of the Cavendish Laboratory was announced at a lecture at the Royal Institution in London. It was over 1,800 times smaller than a proton (in the atomic nucleus).

1939 : The 1939 ~ 40 New York World’s Fair opened in USA with an opening day ceremonial address by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which was broadcast by NBC, in an inauguration of its regularly scheduled television service in New York City.
1941 : Max Merritt the New Zealand-Australian singer-songwriter was born Maxwell James Merritt in Christchurch, New Zealand (died in 2020 aged 79). He was best known as the lead singer of Max Merritt & The Meteors with his top hit “Slippin’ Away”, which was No. 2 on the 1976 Australian singles charts.
1945 : ADOLF HiTLER and Eva Braun COMMiTTED SUiCiDE after only being married for less than 40 hours, in the Führerbunker, during World War II. Adolf Hitler committed suicide by swallowing a cyanide capsule and shooting himself in the head. Soviet soldiers raised the Victory Banner over the Reichstag building. Germany unconditionally surrendered to the Allied forces shortly after Hitler’s death, which ended his dreams of a 1,000-year Reich.
1947 : Boulder Dam In Nevada, USA, was renamed Hoover Dam, to honour America’s 31st president, Herbert Hoover.
1953 : Merrill Osmond the lead singer of The Osmonds was born in Ogden, Utah, USA.
1961 : K-19 the first Soviet nuclear submarine equipped with nuclear missiles was commissioned.
1976 : Amanda Palmer the American singer-songwriter was born in New York City, USA.
1980 : Beatrix was inaugurated as Queen of the Netherlands, following the abdication of Juliana.
1982 : Kirsten Dunst the American actress was born in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, USA.
1983 : Muddy Waters the American blues singer-songwriter died aged 70 (born in 1913).
1993 : CERN announced that World Wide Web protocols will be free.
2000s / 21st century history on the 30th of April
2009 : Chrysler filed for bankruptcy (Chapter 11).
2009 : Attempted assassination on Queen Beatrix in Netherlands, at a Queen’s Day parade in Apeldoorn, resulting in the death of 7 civilians and the perpetrator, with another 10 people injured.
2013 : Willem-Alexander was inaugurated as King of the Netherlands following the abdication of Beatrix.
