1897 : Discovery of the electron as a subatomic particle by J. J. Thomson of the Cavendish Laboratory was announced at a lecture at the Royal Institution in London. It was over 1,800 times smaller than a proton (in the atomic nucleus).

1941 : Max Merritt the New Zealand-Australian singer-songwriter was born Maxwell James Merritt in Christchurch, New Zealand (died in 2020 aged 79). He was best known as the lead singer of Max Merritt & The Meteors with his top hit “Slippin’ Away”, which was No. 2 on the 1976 Australian singles charts.

1945 : ADOLF HiTLER and Eva Braun COMMiTTED SUiCiDE after only being married for less than 40 hours, in the Führerbunker, during World War II. Adolf Hitler committed suicide by swallowing a cyanide capsule and shooting himself in the head. Soviet soldiers raised the Victory Banner over the Reichstag building. Germany unconditionally surrendered to the Allied forces shortly after Hitler’s death, which ended his dreams of a 1,000-year Reich.
