1600s / 17th century history on the 2nd of September
1666 : The Great Fire of London broke out of control, and swept through central London in 3 days. The fire destroyed 13,200 houses, 87 parish churches, St Paul’s Cathedral, and most of the buildings of the City authorities. Approximately 85% of the city inhabitants became homeless.

1952 : Jimmy Connors, the American tennis player, was born in Santa Barbara, California, USA.

1964 : Keanu Reeves, the Canadian actor, was born in Beirut, Lebanon.
1966 : Salma Hayek, Mexican-American actress, was born Salma Valgarma Hayek Jiménez in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico.
1973 : J. R. R. Tolkien, the English writer, died aged 81 (born in 1892). He is best known as the author of The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings.
1984 : The Milperra Massacre between 2 rival motorcycle gangs in New South Wales, Australia. The firearm battle in the Sydney suburb resulted in the deaths of 7 people, and injuries to another 28 people, on Father’s Day in 1984.
1989 : Zedd, Russian-German record DJ and songwriter, was born Anton Zaslavski in Saratov, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. Official website : Zedd.net
1997 : Viktor Frankl, the Austrian neurologist, psychiatrist and philosopher, died aged 92 (born in 1905).
1998 : Swissair Flight 111 crashed near Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, resulting in the deaths of all 229 people onboard the aircraft.
