Daniel Goldin, the chief of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at the time, said it was the beginning of a new era of friendship and cooperation between the U.S. and Russia. Millions of viewers watched on television as Atlantis blasted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in eastern Florida on the 27th June 1995.
