1741 : The eruption of Oshima – Ōshima volcano and the Kampo tsunami, in Japan, resulted in the deaths of up to 2,033 people. The waves caused by the tsunami were estimated to be up to 90 meters in height.

2001 : Graeme Strachan aka Shirley Strahan, the Australian singer – songwriter and television host, died in a self-piloted helicopter accident, aged 49. He was best known as the lead singer of the Skyhooks rock band from 1974 to 1994.
2005 : Hurricane Katrina hit the U.S. Gulf Coast, resulting in the deaths of 1,836 people, and $125 billion in damages. It was the costliest tropical cyclone on record.
