1770 : Captain JAMES COOK arrived at Botany Bay (Sydney, Australia) when he made first landfall on the mainland at Kurnell Peninsula (see Google map & street view), where he made first contact with the Gweagal aboriginal tribe. Cook originally named the bay “Stingray Bay,” but later changed it to Botany Bay.

1826 : The CENTAURUS A GALAXY was discovered by James Dunlop in Parramatta, NSW, Australia. The center of the galaxy in the constellation of Centaurus contains a supermassive black hole with a mass of 55 million solar masses. Centaurus is one of the largest constellations among the 88 listed modern constellations.

1958 : Eve Plumb the American actress was born in Burbank, California. She is best known as Jan Brady in the Brady Bunch sitcom from 1969 to 1974.
1965 : Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) successfully launched their 7th rocket.
1967 : Muhammad Ali was stripped of his boxing title after he refused induction into the United States Army on the previous day.
1968 : Carnie Wilson the American singer was born in Bel Air, California, USA. She is best known as the co-founder of Wilson Philips pop group. Carnie is the daughter of Brian Wilson, the co-founder of The Beach Boys.
1968 : Hair : The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical opened at the Biltmore Theatre on Broadway, Midtown Manhattan, New York City.
1970 : ANDRE AGASSi the American tennis player was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. He was a former world No.1 tennis player, winning the Grand Slam 8 times. Agassi also won a gold medal playing tennis in the 1996 Olympics.
1986 : City of Los Angeles Public Library fire damaged or destroyed approximately 400,000 books and other items.
1986 : American and European spy satellites captured the disastrous ruins of the 4th Reactor at the Chernobyl Power Plant.
1991 : Bangladesh cyclone hit the Chittagong district of south-eastern Bangladesh, killing approximately 138,000 people. The winds were up to 249 km per hour (155 miles per hour) (249 km/h) and as many as 10 million people were left homeless.
1991 : Racha earthquake hit Georgia with a destructive maximum intensity, killing 270 people.
1992 : Riots in Los Angeles followed the acquittal of police officers charged with excessive force in the beating of Rodney King, resulting in 63 deaths and 100s of buildings destroyed, over the following 3 days.

2004 : The final OLDSMOBiLE was built in Michigan, after 107 years of vehicle production.
2008 : Albert Hofmann the Swiss chemist died aged 102 (born in 1906). He was best known as the first known person to synthesize, ingest, and learn about the psychedelic effects of LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide).
2011 : The Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton took place at Westminster Abbey in London.
2014 : Bob Hoskins the English actor died aged 71 (born in 1942).
2014 : Al Feldstein the American writer and illustrator died aged 88 (born in 1925). He was best known for his work at EC Comics (1956 to 1985), and editor of Mad magazine. Al retired from Mad to concentrated on painting wildlife.
