1694 : The Bank of England was established as the central bank of the United Kingdom, when it was granted a royal charter, through the passage of the Tonnage Act 1694. 1800s / 19th century history on the 27th of July

1890 : Vincent van Gogh shot himself in the chest with a revolver, and then walked back to the Auberge Ravoux, the place where he was a lodger, in the village of Auvers-sur-Oise, on the outskirts of Paris, in France. He was attended to by 2 doctors, but there was no surgeon available to remove the bullet. Vincent died 2 days later due to an untreated infection from the gunshot wound.

1921 : Hormone insulin regulates blood sugar was proven by biochemist Frederick Banting and researchers at the University of Toronto, in Canada.

1933 : Ted Whitten the Australian footballer was born (died in 1995 aged 62).

1938 : Gary Gygax the American game designer and co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons was born Ernest Gary Gygax in Chicago, Illinois, USA (died in 2008 aged 69).

1940 : Bugs Bunny made his 1st appearance, on A Wild Hare, an animated Warner Bros. Merrie Melodies cartoon.

1944 : Bobbie Gentry the American singer and songwriter was born Roberta Lee Streeter near Woodland, Mississippi, USA. She was one of the first female artists to compose and produce her own music. 1947 : Betty Thomas the American actress and filmmaker was born Betty Lucille Nienhauser in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. She is best known for playing Sergeant Lucy Bates on the Hill Street Blues television series from 1981 to 1987, for which she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

1949 : The de Havilland Comet, the world’s first commercial jet airliner made its 1st flight.

1955 : The Austrian State Treaty aka the Austrian Independence Treaty which established Austria as a sovereign state, was made effective.

1971 : Matthew Johns the Australian rugby league player was born in Cessnock, New South Wales, Australia.

1974 : The House of Representatives Judiciary Committee voted 27 to 11 to recommend the first article of impeachment (for obstruction of justice) against President Richard Nixon, during the Watergate scandal.

1987 : RMS Titanic Inc. began the first expedited salvage of wreckage of the RMS Titanic.

1992 : Max Dupain (AC, OBE) the Australian photographer died aged 81 (born in 1911).

1999 : Tony Hawk landed the 1st 900 on a skateboard (two-and-a-half complete revolutions) at the 5th annual X Games in San Francisco, California.

2000s / 21st century history on the 27th of July

2002 : Ukraine airshow disaster: A Sukhoi Su-27 fighter crashed during the air show at Lviv, Ukraine killing 85 and injuring over 100 people, making it the largest air show disaster in history.

2003 : Bob Hope (KBE) the British-American actor and comedian died aged 100 (born in 1903). Official website : BobHope.org

2005 : NASA grounded the STS-114 Space Shuttle, pending an investigation of the continuing problem with the shedding of foam insulation from the external fuel tank. During an ascent, the external tank of the Space Shuttle Discovery shed a piece of foam slightly smaller than the piece that caused the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.

2007 : Phoenix News Helicopter Collision of 2 news helicopters from Phoenix, Arizona television stations KNXV and KTVK collided over Steele Indian School Park in central Phoenix while covering a police chase.

2012 : Darryl Cotton the Australian singer-songwriter and television host died aged 62, shortly after he was diagnosed with liver cancer in May 2012. (born in 1949).
