1800s / 19th century history on the 27th of August

1883 : The eruption of the Krakatoa volcano in in the in Indonesia, destroyed 70% of the island of Krakatoa, and the surrounding archipelago.  The eruption resulted in the deaths of 36,417 people. It was one of the deadliest and most destructive volcanic events in recorded history. The explosions were heard over 3,000 kilometres (1,865 miles) away in Perth, Western Australia.

1890 : Man Ray, the American visual artist, was born Emmanuel Radnitzky in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA (died in 1976 aged 86).

1908 : Sir Donald Bradman (AC) the Australian cricketer, was born in Cootamundra, New South Wales, Australia (died in 2001 aged 92).

1908 : Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th President of the United States, was born in Stonewall, Texas, USA (died in 1973 aged 64).

1939 : The 1st flight of the world’s first aircraft to fly under turbojet power, was done by the Heinkel He 178 jet aircraft.

1956 : The Calder Hall nuclear power station in Seascale, United Kingdom, was connected to the national power grid. It was the world’s first full-scale nuclear power station.

1962 : The Mariner 2 unmanned NASA space mission was launched to Venus.

2000s / 21st century history on the 27th of August

2003 : Mars was at its closest to Earth within the previous 60,000 years, when it passed by Earth at a distance of 55,758,005 kilometres (34,646,418 miles).

2006 : Comair Flight 5191 Delta Connection crashed on takeoff from Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky, USA. The crash resulted in the deaths of 49 of the 50 people onboard the aircraft.

2011 : Hurricane Irene hit the United States east coast, resulting in the deaths of 49 people, and damages to the value of $15.6 billion.

2013 : Bill Peach (AM) the Australian television journalist, died of cancer, aged 78 (born in 1935).
