1906 : Albert Sabin, the Polish-American medical researcher, was born in Białystok, Russian Empire, now known as Poland (died in 1993 aged 86). He is best known for developing the polio vaccine, which almost fully eradicated the disease around the world.
1910 : Mother Teresa, aka Saint Teresa of Calcutta, the Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun, was born Anjezë Gonxhe, in Üsküp, Kosovo Vilayet, Ottoman Empire, now known as Skopje, North Macedonia (died in 1997 aged 87).
1920 : The 19th amendment to United States Constitution took effect, giving women the right to vote.
1944 : Charles de Gaulle entered Paris, France, during World War II.
1970 : Melissa McCarthy, the American actress and comedian, was born in Plainfield, Illinois, USA.
