1848 : The 1st known photojournalism photograph was taken, when the June Days uprising staged by French workers in Paris, France, was photographed. The black and white photograph featured a street scene showing barricades on rue Saint-Maur during the uprising.

1874 : ROSE O’NEiLL the American cartoonist, illustrator, artist, and writer was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, USA (died in 1944 aged 69). She was best known for creating the Kewpie, which earned her international fame and fortune, as it became the best known cartoon character in the world, until Mickey Mouse arrived. Rose O’Neill became the highest-paid and best-known female commercial illustrator in America.

1900 : The Dunhuang manuscripts were discovered in the Mogao Caves of Dunhuang, in China, by Taoist monk Wang Yuanlu. The cache of ancient texts were of great historical and religious significance.

1903 : GEORGE ORWELL the British novelist was born Eric Arthur Blair in Motihari, Bengal Presidency, British India (died in 1950 aged 46). He was best known for the novels Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949).

1925 : JUNE LOCKHART the American actress was born in New York City, USA. She is best known as Dr. Maureen Robinson and the mother in the Lost in Space television series from 1965 to 1968.

1928 : PEYO the Belgian comic writer and artist was born Pierre Culliford in Brussels, Belgium (died in 1992 aged 64). He is best known as the creator of The Smurfs in 1958. Official website : Smurf.com

1929 : ERiC CARLE the American author and illustrator was born in Northampton, Massachusetts, USA (died in 2021 aged 91). He is best known for his picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which sold more than 50 million copies since it was first published in 1969.

1947 : The Diary of a Young Girl aka The Diary of Anne Frank was published for the first time.

1952 : TiM FiNN (OBE) the New Zealand singer-songwriter was born Brian Timothy Finn in Te Awamutu, New Zealand. He is best known as the co-founder of Split Enz and Finn Brothers. 1991 : Slovenia and Croatia declared their independence from Yugoslavia.

1993 : The 1st female Prime Minister of Canada, Kim Campbell, was sworn in to office.

1997 : Progress spacecraft collided with the Russian space station Mir. The cargo spacecraft didn’t have any crew onboard.

2009 : Farrah Fawcett the American actress died of anal cancer aged 62 (born in 1947). She was best known for her starring role in the Charlie’s Angels television series from 1976 to 1977.

2021 : Derek Chauvin the former police officer convicted of the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, USA, was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison.
