- 1534 – French explorer Jacques Cartier planted a cross on the Gaspé Peninsula and took possession of the territory that is now known as Canada, in the name of Francis I of France.
- 1701 – Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded the trading post at Fort Pontchartrain, which later became the city of Detroit.
- 1847 – Brigham Young led 148 Mormon pioneers into Salt Lake Valley, after 17 months of travel, resulting in the establishment of Salt Lake City.
- 1847 – Richard March Hoe the American inventor, patented the rotary-type printing press.

JULY 24th ~ This Day in History highlights ~ 1911 : Machu Picchu discovered | & more about history on this day in the video… American archeologist Hiram Bingham got his first look at the ancient Inca settlementat of Machu Picchu in Peru, now one of the world’s top tourist destinations. Machu Picchu is in the rocky countryside of northwest of Cuzco, and believed to have been a summer retreat for Inca leaders, whose civilization was virtually wiped out by Spanish invaders in the 16th century. For hundreds of years its existence was only secretly known to the peasants living the region, until the summer of 1911, when Hiram Bingham arrived with a small team of explorers to search for the famous lost cities of the Incas.
