1500s / 16th century history on the 24th of July

1534 : French explorer Jacques Cartier planted a cross on the Gaspé Peninsula to take possession of the territory he named The Country of Canadas in the name of France.

1567 : Mary, Queen of Scots was forced to abdicate, and was replaced by James VI, her 1 year old son, who then reigned as the King of England for 58 years, until 1625.

1800s / 19th century history on the 24th of July

1847 : Brigham Young arrived in Salt Lake Valley leading 148 Mormon pioneers, which resulted in the establishment of Salt Lake City.

1847 : The rotary printing press was patented by Richard March Hoe, an inventor from New York City, USA. The press invention featured a revolving cylinder, which could print much faster than a traditional flatbed printing press.

1897 : Amelia Earhart the American aviator and author was born in Atchison, Kansas, USA (died in 1937 aged 39). Official website : AmeliaEarhart.com

1900s / 20th century history on the 24th of July

1911 : MACHU PiCCHU, The Lost City of the Incas was rediscovered by Hiram Bingham III. Machu Picchu is a 15th century Inca citadel located high up in the Andes Mountains, in Peru, at 2,430 metres (7,970 ft).

1951 : Lynda Carter the American actress was born in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. She is best known for playing Diana Prince in the Wonder Woman television series from 1975 to 1979. Official website : LyndaCarter.com

1965 : Andrew Gaze (AM) the Australian basketball player and coach was born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He played with the Melbourne Tigers, Udine, Washington Bullets, Apollon Patras, and the San Antonio Spurs, during his basketball playing career from 1984 to 2005.

1968 : Laura Leighton the American actress was born in Iowa City, Iowa, USA. She is best known as  playing Sydney Andrews on the Melrose Place television series from 1993 to 1997.

1969 : APOLLO 11 made a safe splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, on the return trip from the Moon spaceflight which landed humans on the Moon for the first time. The prime crew included Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin.

1969 : Jennifer Lopez aka J.Lo the American singer, dancer and actress was born in New York City, USA. Official website : JenniferLopez.com

1979 : Rose Byrne the Australian actress was born in Balmain, New South Wales, Australia.

1980 : PETER SELLERS the English actor and comedian died from a heart attack, aged 54 (born in 1925). 3 days before he died he left Geneva in Switzerland to see the location of his parents’ ashes for the first time, at the Golders Green Crematorium in London. On the following day he was going to have a reunion dinner with his Goon Show partners Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe, but just after lunch in his hotel suite at The Dorchester hotel he collapsed from a heart attack. He was taken to the Middlesex Hospital in London, where he died just after midnight, early in the morning on the 24th July 1980.

1986 : Natalie Tran the Australian YouTuber was born in Auburn, New South Wales, Australia. She has over 1.8 million YouTube channel subscribers, with over 172 million views to all her videos, since she started communitychannel on YouTube on the 12th September in 2006, when she was 19 year old.

1987 : Hulda Crooks aged 91 climbed Mt. Fuji in Japan, which made her the oldest person to climb Mt. Fuji, Japan’s highest peak, at 3,776 metres (12,388 ft).

2000s / 21st century history on the 24th of July

2013 : Santiago de Compostela derailment train crash in Spain, when the high-speed train derailed on a bend at about twice the speed limit of 80 km/h (50 mph). The crash resulted in the deaths of 79 people, and injuring 139 others.

2014 : Air Algérie Flight 5017 crashed in Mali, Africa, after it disappeared from radar about 50 minutes after it departed Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The crash resulted in the deaths of all 116 people onboard.

2021 : Dieter Brummer the Australian actor died aged 45 (born in 1976). He was best known as Shane Parrish on the Home and Away television soap opera, from 1992 to 1996.
