1800s / 17th century history on the 24th of April
1885 : Annie Oakley the American sharpshooter was hired to be a part of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West.
1895 : JOSHUA SLOCUM set sail on a sloop from Boston in USA, on a journey to be the first person to sail single-handedly around the world. Three years later on the 27th June 1898, he returned to Newport in USA, after sailing 74,000 km (46,000 miles) circumnavigating the world, which went almost unnoticed, because the Spanish-American War had begun 2 months earlier, and was dominating the headlines. Eventually many American newspapers published articles about his amazing triumph, and in 1899 he published a book about his epic voyage in Sailing Alone Around the World.
1900s / 20th century history on the 24th of April
1904 : Willem de Kooning the Dutch-American artist was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands (died in 1997 aged 92).
1913 : The Woolworth Building skyscraper in New York City was opened. Its height of 241 metres (792 feet) made it the tallest building in the world from 1913 to 1930. Address : 233 Broadway, Manhattan, New York City
1914 : The Franck–Hertz experiment was presented to the German Physical Society. It was the first electrical measurement to clearly show the quantum nature of atoms, which transformed our understanding of the world.
1942 : Barbra Streisand the American singer was born in New York City, USA.
1953 : Winston Churchill was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
1967 : Cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov died in Soyuz 1 when its parachute failed to open on the descent module. He was the first human to die during an in-flight space mission.
1970 : Dong Fang Hong I was launched by China, the 5th nation to put an object into orbit using its own booster.
1974 : STEPHEN WiLTSHiRE the artist with photographic memory was born in London, England. He is an architectural artist and autistic savant, known for his ability to draw a detailed city scene from memory after only seeing it once. Stephen Wiltshire was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2006, for his services to art. He opened a permanent gallery at the Royal Opera Arcade in London. 1990 : The Hubble Space Telescope was launched from the Space Shuttle Discovery.
1996 : Ashleigh Barty the Australian tennis player was born in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia.
2000s / 21st century history on the 24th of April
2004 : Estée Lauder the co-founder of Estée Lauder Companies died aged 97 (born in New York City in 1906). She was the only woman in Time Magazine’s list of 20 most influential business geniuses of the 20th century, published in 1998. The official website of Estée Lauder : ELcompaines.com
2005 : Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was inaugurated as the 265th Pope of the Catholic Church, with the new name of Pope Benedict XVI.
2011 : WikiLeaks started publishing the Guantanamo Bay files leak.
