1765 : Stamp Act passed by British Parliament to introduce a tax to be levied directly on its American colonies, to raise funds to pay off debts and defend the vast new American territories won from the French in the Seven Years’ War from 1756 to 1763. The tax was on all materials printed for commercial and legal use, such as newspapers, diplomas, marriage licences, pamphlets, playing cards. and more.

1794 : The Slave Trade Act of 1794 banned the export of slaves from the United States.

1873 : The Spanish National Assembly abolished slavery in Puerto Rico.

1920 : James E. Brown the American actor was born in Desdemona, Texas, USA (died in 1992 aged 72). He was best best known as Lieutenant Ripley “Rip” Masters in The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin television series, in all 166 episodes from 1954 to 1959.

1920 : Werner Klemperer the German-American actor was born in Cologne, Germany (died in 2000 aged 80). He was best known as Colonel Wilhelm Klink in Hogan’s Heroes television sitcom series.

1936 : Roger Whittaker the Kenyan-English singer-songwriter was born in Nairobi, Kenya.

1960 : Arthur Leonard Schawlow & Charles Hard Townes received the first patent for a laser.

1976 : Reese Witherspoon the American actress was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

1978 : Karl Wallenda of The Flying Wallendas died after falling off a tight-rope suspended between two hotels in San Juan, Puerto Rico, at the age of 73. He was a German-American acrobat, tightrope walker, and founder of The Flying Wallendas (born in 1905).
