1915Guadalajara train disaster : Over 600 people were killed in Guadalajara, Mexico, when a Mexican train travelling from Colima plunged off the tracks into a deep canyon, after the engineer lost control on a long steep descent. The overcrowded train which had people clinging to the roofs and undercarriages, and many were thrown off around curves before the crash. The Guadalajara train disaster still remains the deadliest railway accident in North American history.

1924 – Ramsay MacDonald became the first Labour Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on this day.

1927 – The first live radio commentary of a football match : Teddy Wakelam gave the first live radio commentary of the match between Arsenal F.C. and Sheffield United at Highbury.

1941 – British and Commonwealth troops captured Tobruk from Italian forces in World War 2, during Operation Compass on this day.

1947 – KTLA began operation in Hollywood, USA, becoming the first commercial television station west of the Mississippi River on this day.

1957 – The New York City “Mad Bomber”, George P. Metesky, was arrested in Waterbury, Connecticut and charged with planting more than 30 bombs.

1968 – Apollo 5 lifted off carrying the first Lunar module into space on this day.

1970 – The world’s first “jumbo jet”, the Boeing 747 began commercial service for Pan American Airways, with a maiden voyage from John F. Kennedy International Airport to London Heathrow Airport.

1973 – Elective abortion was legalized in all 50 states in America, when the Supreme Court of the United States delivered its decisions in Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton.
