1632 ~ Galileo’s Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems was published.

1651 ~ St. Peter’s Flood storm struck the North Sea coast in Northern Germany, drowning approximately 15,000 people.

1819 ~ Spain sold Florida to the United States for 5 million U.S. dollars, with the signing of the Adams–Onís Treaty.

1853 ~ Washington University was founded as Eliot Seminary, in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

1855 ~ The Pennsylvania State University was founded as the Farmers’ High School of Pennsylvania.

1878 ~ The 1st Woolworth store was opened by Frank Woolworth, in Utica, New York.

1909 ~ Tthe Great White Fleet returned to the United States after a voyage around the world.

1915 ~ The Imperial German Navy instituted unrestricted submarine warfare during World War 1.

1924 ~ U.S. President Calvin Coolidge became the 1st President to deliver a radio address from the White House.

1943 ~ White Rose resistance members, Sophie Scholl, Hans Scholl, and Christoph Probst were executed in Nazi Germany, during World War 2.

1958 ~ The United Arab Republic was formed by Egypt and Syria.

1980 ~ Miracle on Ice in Lake Placid, New York, when the United States hockey team defeated the Soviet Union hockey team 4 – 3.  This was one of the most dramatic upsets in Olympic history, when the underdog U.S. hockey team, consisting of college players, defeated the four-time defending gold-medal winning Soviet team at the XIII Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York. The Soviet squad, known as the finest in the world, fell to the youthful American team 4-3 before a crowd of 10,000 spectators. Two days later, the Americans defeated Finland 4-2 to clinch the hockey gold.

1995 ~ The Corona reconnaissance satellite program was declassified.

1997 ~ British scientists announced that Dolly the sheep was successfully cloned, in Roslin, Midlothian.

2005 ~ The Zarand earthquake in Iran killed 612 people dead, and injured 1,411.

2006 ~ Britain’s biggest robbery was staged by 6 men, stealing £53m (approximately $92.5 million or €78 million) from a Securitas depot in Tonbridge, Kent, England.

2011 ~ The Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand killed 185 people.

2012 ~ Buenos Aires train crash in Argentina, killed 51 people and injured 700.

2015 ~ A Padma River ferry capsized killing 70 of the passengers, in Bangladesh, India.
