1800s / the 19th century on the 21st of April
1816 : Charlotte Brontë the English novelist and poet was born in Thornton, Yorkshire, England (died in 1855 aged 38). She was the eldest of the three Brontë sisters whose novels became classics of English literature.
1856 : Australian labour movement stonemasons and building workers stopped work and marched from the University of Melbourne to Parliament House to achieve an eight-hour day. Their protest was successful, and they’re noted to be among the first organised workers in the world to achieve the eight-hour day with no loss of pay.
1900s / the 20th century on the 21st of April
1910 : Mark Twain the American writer died of a heart attack aged 74 (born as Samuel Langhorne Clemens in 1835).
1918 : Manfred von Richthofen aka the Red Baron, the German captain and fighter pilot died when shot by bullet while flying, aged 25 (born in 1892).
1926 : Elizabeth II, the Queen of the United Kingdom was born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary in Mayfair, London. Her 95th birthday on the 21st April 2021.
1934 : The Surgeon’s Photograph, famous photo of the Loch Ness Monster was published in the Daily Mail. Sixty-five years later in 1999 it was revealed to be a hoax.
1947 : Iggy Pop the American singer-songwriter was born James Newell Osterberg Jr. in Muskegon, Michigan, USA.
1952 : Secretary’s Day now known as Administrative Professionals’ Day was first celebrated.
1958 : Andie MacDowell the American model and actress was born Rosalie Anderson MacDowell in Gaffney, South Carolina, USA.
1959 : Robert Smith the English musician and lead singer of The Cure was born in Blackpool, England.
1962 : The Seattle World’s Fair aka Century 21 Exposition opened. It was the first World’s Fair in the United States since World War 2.
1965 : New York World’s Fair opened for its 2nd and final season (1964 to 1965).
1972 : Apollo 16 lunar module landed on the Moon, commanded by John Young and piloted by Charles Duke. Apollo 16 was the 5th NASA Apollo Program crewed lunar landing.
1977 : ANNiE opened on Broadway. The very popular award winning musical was based on Little Orphan Annie comic strip by Harold Gray, music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and book by Thomas Meehan.
1999 : Buddy Rogers the American actor died aged 94 (born in 1904).
