1788 – Admiral Arthur Phillip chose Port Jackson (encompassing Sydney Harbour) as a more suitable location for a colony in Australia, when he led the First Fleet to Botany Bay.

1929In Old Arizona, the first full-length talking motion picture filmed outdoors was released.

1936 – King George V of the United Kingdom died at the age of 70 years old.

1937 – Franklin D. Roosevelt and John Nance Garner were sworn in for their second terms as U.S. President and U.S. Vice President.

1949 – Point Four Program, for economic aid to poor countries, was announced by President Harry S. Truman at his inaugural address for a full term as President of the United States.

1954 – National Negro Network was established with 40 charter member radio stations in the United States.

1961 – John F. Kennedy was inaugurated the 35th President of the United States of America. He was the youngest man to be elected into that office, and also the first Catholic president.

1981 – Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as the 40th President of the United States of America, and twenty minutes later Iran released 52 American hostages.

1986 – Martin Luther King Jr. Day was celebrated as a federal holiday for the first time, In the United States.

1992 – Air Inter Flight 148 Airbus A320-111 crashed into a mountain near Strasbourg, France. 87 people were killed from the 96 people on board the flight.

2009 – Barack Obama was inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States of America. He became the first African-American President of the United States.

2021 – Joe Biden was inaugurated as the 46th President of the United States of America, after defeating Donald Trump in the election. Joe Biden at the age of 78 became the oldest person ever inaugurated. Kamala Harris became the first female Vice President of the United States.
