1600s / the 17th century on the 19th of March

1649 : The House of Lords was abolished by the House of Commons of England passing an act, and declaring it “useless and dangerous to the people of England”.

1800s / the 19th century on the 19th of March

1831 : First documented bank heist in American history when burglars stole $245,000 (based on value in 1831) from the City Bank (now Citibank) on Wall Street. Most of the stolen money was recovered by the police.

1895 : The 1st footage using newly patented cinematograph by Auguste and Louis Lumièr was recorded.

1900s / the 20th century on the 19th of March

1918 : Time time zones were established, and daylight saving was approved by the US Congress.

1931 : A bill legalizing gambling in Nevada was signed by Fred B. Balzar.

1932 : The Sydney Harbour Bridge was opened in Sydney, the capital city of New South Wales, in Australia.

1936 : Ursula Andress the Swiss model and actress was born in Ostermundigen, Switzerland

1945 : Nero Decree  was issued by Adolf Hitler ordering the destruction of German infrastructure to prevent Allied forces using it as they penetrated deep within Germany during World War 2. The order included the destruction of all industries, military installations, shops, transportation facilities, and communications facilities in Germany.

1952 : Harvey Weinstein the American sex offender, and former film producer was born in New York City, USA. In 2020 he was sentenced to prison for 23 years until 2043 when he will be 91 years old, but he’ll be able to apply for the earliest release in 2039 at the age of 87.  

1955 : Bruce Willis the German-American actor was born Walter Bruce Willis in Idar-Oberstein, West Germany.

1969 : Emley Moor transmitting station TV-mast collapsed. The 385-metre-tall (1,263 feet) in the United Kingdom collapsed due to an ice build-up.

1979 : The United States House of Representatives began broadcasting its daily business via the cable television network C-SPAN.

1998 : Ariana Afghan Airlines Boeing 727 crashed while approaching Kabul International Airport, in Afghanistan, resulting in the death of all 45 people on board.

2000s / the 21st century on the 19th of March

2001 : German trade union Ver.di was formed. The official website Verdi.de

2003: War in iRAQ began when the United States, along with coalition forces primarily from the United Kingdom, initiated war on Iraq. After explosions began to rock Baghdad, Iraq’s capital, U.S. President George W. Bush announced, “At this hour, American and coalition forces are in the early stages of military operations to disarm Iraq, to free its people and to defend the world from grave danger”, in a televised address. President Bush and his advisors built much of their case for war on the idea that Iraq, under dictator Saddam Hussein, possessed or was in the process of building weapons of mass destruction. 

2008 : GRB 080319B cosmic burst was briefly observed. It was the farthest object visible to the naked eye.

2008 : Arthur C. Clarke the English science fiction writer died aged 90 (born in 1917).
