1886 : GEORGE MALLORY the English mountaineer was born in Mobberley, Cheshire, England. He took part in the first 3 British expeditions to Mount Everest in Tibet, in the early 1920s. George Mallory died on the North Face of Mount Everest in 1924, aged 37.

1928 : Aviator Amelia Earhart became the 1st woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. She was accompanied by pilot Wilmer Stultz.

1972 : British European Airways H.S. Trident crashed at Staines in London, 2 minutes after taking off from Heathrow Airport. All of the 118 people on board were killed.

1983 : Sally Ride the astronaut became the first American woman in space, during the Space Shuttle program STS-7.
1983 : Billy Slater the Australian rugby league player was born in Nambour, Queensland, Australia.
1992 : Peter Allen the Australian singer-songwriter and pianist died from an AIDS-related throat cancer, aged 48 (born in 1944).
