1745 ~ The city of Surakarta in Central Java was founded, and became the capital of the Sunanate of Surakarta Hadiningrat.

1885 ~ Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain was published in the United States.

1911 ~ The 1st official flight with airmail took place from Allahabad, United Provinces, British India, by 23 year old pilot Henri Pequet, delivering 6500 letters 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) to Naini.

1930 ~ Pluto was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh, while studying photographs taken in January.

1930 ~ Elm Farm Ollie became the 1st cow to fly in a fixed-wing aircraft.

1954 ~ The 1st Church of Scientology was opened, in Los Angeles, USA.

1957 ~ Walter James Bolton became the last person to be legally executed in New Zealand.

1965 ~ The Gambia became independent from the United Kingdom.

1972 ~ The California Supreme Court invalidated the state’s death penalty and commuted the sentences of all death row inmates to life imprisonment, in the case of People v. Anderson.

1977 ~ The Space Shuttle Enterprise test vehicle was carried on its maiden flight on top of a Boeing 747.

2003 ~ The Daegu subway fire in South Korea killed approximately 200 people.

2010 ~ WikiLeaks published the 1st of many classified documents disclosed by a soldier now known as Chelsea Manning.

2013 ~ $50 million of diamonds were stolen by armed robbers at Brussels Airport in Belgium.
