1947 : Wolfgang Flür the German musician from Kraftwerk was born in Frankfurt, Germany.
1948 : The South Korean constitution was proclaimed.
1950 : Phoebe Snow the American singer-songwriter and guitarist was born Phoebe Ann Laub in New York City, USA (died in 2011 aged 60).
1952 : Nicolette Larson the American singer was born in Helena, Montana, USA (died in 1997 aged 45).
1955 : Disneyland was dedicated and opened by Walt Disney in Anaheim, California.
1956 : Julie Bishop the 38th Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs was born in Lobethal, South Australia.
1962 : The Small Boy test shot Little Feller I became the last atmospheric test detonation at the Nevada National Security Site, during Nuclear weapons testing.
1975 : An American Apollo & a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft docked with each other in orbit marked the first ever link-up of this kind between spacecraft from the two nations, during the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project.

1981 : The Humber Bridge was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in England, United Kingdom.
1989 : The B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber had its first flight.
1996 : TWA Flight 800 exploded off the coast of Long Island, New York. The Paris-bound TWA Boeing 747 explosion killed all 230 on board.
1996 : The Community of Portuguese Language Countries was founded.
1998 : Papua New Guinea undersea earthquake triggered a tsunami and destroyed 10 villages in Papua New Guinea, killing approximately 3,183, with 2,000 or more unaccounted for, and thousands homeless.
1998 : A diplomatic conference adopted the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, which established a permanent international court to prosecute individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression.
2000s / 21st century history on the 17th of July
2001 : Concorde was brought back in to service, almost a year after the July 2000 crash.
2007 : TAM Airlines Flight 3054 Airbus A320 crashed into a warehouse after landing too fast when it missed the end of the runway at São Paulo–Congonhas Airport, in Brazil. The crash resulted in the deaths of all 187 people onboard the aircraft, and also the deaths of 12 people on the ground.
2014 : Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 MH17 Boeing 777 was shot down from the sky near Hrabove in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, during its journey from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. All 298 people onboard the aircraft were killed.
2018 : The 12 irregular moons of Jupiter discovery were announced by Scott S. Sheppard and his team of astronomers.
