1228 : FRANCiS of ASSiSi the Italian Catholic friar was made a saint when he was canonized. He later became one of the most venerated religious figures in Christianity, and became associated with patronage of animals and the natural environment.

1377 : King Richard II of England aka Richard of Bordeaux was crowned king at the age of 10. He was King of England for 22 years, until 1399, when he was deposed.

1910 : The 1st aircraft built in Australia, the Duigan pusher biplane, made its first flight. It was flown by John Robertson Duigan, at his family’s farm at Mia Mia, in Victoria, Australia.
1911 : Ginger Rogers the American actress was born Virginia Katherine McMath in Independence, Missouri, USA (died in 1995 aged 83).
1935 : The world’s first parking meter was installed, in Oklahoma City, USA.
1941 : Joe DiMaggio broke the MLB record for the longest hitting streak in Major League Baseball.
1945 : The United States detonated a plutonium-based test nuclear weapon near Alamogordo, in New Mexico, during the Manhattan Project.
1951 : J. D. Salinger published The Catcher in the Rye, his popular and controversial novel.
1957 : KLM Flight 844 crashed 1.2 kilometres from where it departed at Biak-Mokmer Airport, Indonesia. The crash resulted in the deaths of 59 of the 68 people on the aircraft.
1963 : Phoebe Cates the American actress was born in New York City, USA.
1965 : The Mont Blanc Tunnel opened, linking France to Italy.
1967 : Will Ferrell the American actor was born John William Ferrell in Irvine, California, USA.
1969 : Apollo 11 was launched from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Kennedy, in Florida, USA. It was the first mission to land astronauts on the Moon.
1971 : Corey Feldman the American actor was born in Reseda, Los Angeles, California, USA.
1974 : Wendell Sailor the Australian rugby player was born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
1979 : Iraqi President Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr resigned and was replaced by Saddam Hussein.
1981 : Harry Chapin the American singer and songwriter died in a car crash, aged 38 (born in 1942). Official website : HarryChapinMusic.com
1994 : The comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 was destroyed when it was involved in a head-on collision with Jupiter.
1999 : John F. Kennedy Jr. crashed his Piper Saratoga PA-32R aircraft off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, USA, into the Atlantic Ocean, with his wife, and her sister on board. Their bodies were recovered from the ocean floor 3 days later, on the 21st of July.
2000s / 21st century history on the 16th of July
