1790 : Ludwig Emil Grimm the German painter was born in Hanau, Germany (died in 1863 aged 73). He was also an engraver, etcher and art professor. Ludwig was the younger brother of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, of the literary duo the Brothers Grimm.

1794 : Eli Whitney was granted a patent for the cotton engine aka cotton gin.

1800s / the 19th century on the 14th of March

1804 : JOHANN STRAUSS the Austrian composer was born in Leopoldstadt (now known as Vienna) in Austria (died in 1849 aged 45).

1874 : Anton Philips the Dutch co-founder Philips Electronics was born in Zaltbommel, Gelderland, Netherlands (died in 1951 aged 77).

1879 : ALBERT EiNSTEiN the German-American physicist was born in Ulm, Kingdom of Württemberg, in the German Empire (died in 1955 aged 76). He was was also an engineer, academic, and Nobel Prize laureate. Albert Einstein was the son of a Jewish electrical engineer. Einstein’s theories of special and general relativity drastically altered man’s view of the universe, and his work in particle and energy theory helped make possible quantum mechanics and, ultimately, the atomic bomb.

1883 : Karl Marx the German philosopher and theorist died (born in 1818).

1885 : The MiKADO opera’s first public performance was held at the Savoy Theatre in London, and continued for 672 performances, which was the longest run of any theatre piece in the world at that time, and also the second-longest run of musical theatre. The Mikado is a comic opera by W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan.

1900s / the 20th century on the 14th of March

1900 : The Gold Standard Act was ratified, to place the United States currency on the gold standard.

1903 : Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge was established by President Theodore Roosevelt, making it the first national wildlife refuge in the USA.

1931 : Alam Ara the first film in India with sound was released.

1933 : Michael Caine the English actor was born in Rotherhithe, London, England.

1933 : Quincy Jones the American musician was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He is also a singer-songwriter, composer, arranger, record producer, multi-instrumentalist, trumpet player, and film and television producer.

1939 : Slovakia became the Slovak Republic aka Slovak State, a partially-recognized client state of Nazi Germany, which lasted 6 years until the 4th April 1945.

1942 : Anne Miller became the first American patient to be treated with penicillin.

1947 : Jona Lewie the English singer was born in Southampton, England. He is also a songwriter, keyboard player, multi-instrumentalist.

1948 : Billy Crystal the American actor was born in New York City, New York, USA. He is also a comedian, singer, writer, director, producer, and television host.

1964 : Jack Ruby was convicted of killing Lee Harvey Oswald, the assumed assassin of John F. Kennedy.

1972 : Sterling Airways Flight 296 crashed in the United Arab Emirates, near Kalba, while approaching Dubai International Airport, resulting in the death of 112 people.

1980 : LOT Flight 7 crashed near Warsaw in Poland, during its final approach, resulting in the death of 87 people, which included an American boxing team of 14 men.

1995 : Norman Thagard became the first American astronaut to go to space on a Russian launch vehicle.

2000s / the 21st century on the 14th of March

2017 : Nihonium chemical element had a naming ceremony in Tokyo, Japan.

2018 : Stephen Hawking the English physicist died aged 76 (born in 1942).

2019 : Cyclone Idai hit Mozambique, and caused devastating floods with more than 1000 deaths.
