1561 : A celestial phenomenon was reported in the sky over Nuremberg (Bavaria, Germany). The mass sighting was described as an aerial battle of unidentified flying objects.

1800s / the 19th century on the 14th of April

1865 : U.S. President ABRAHAM LiNCOLN was SHOT in Ford’s Theatre by John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln died on the following day. John Wilkes Booth, an actor and Confederate sympathizer, fatally shot President Abraham Lincoln at a play at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C., USA.

1894 : The first ever commercial motion picture house opened in New York City, United States, using 10 Kinetoscopes, a device for viewing peep-show films.

The Kinetoscope : Thomas Edison worked with his assistant and part-time photographer, William Dickson to create a motion picture camera in the 1890s. 1900s / the 20th century on the 14th of April

1900 : The EXPOSiTiON UNiVERSELLE started in Paris, France. It was a world’s fair to celebrate the achievements of the past century and to accelerate development in the following century. L’Exposition de Paris 1900 was held at Grand Palais, Petit Palais, and visited by 48 million people during the 7 month duration until closure on the 12th November 1900. Displays included technological innovations such as the Grande Roue de Paris Ferris wheel, talking films, moving sidewalk, escalators, diesel engines and the telegraphone (1st magnetic audio recorder). The fair also gave international attention to the Art Nouveau style.

1912 : RMS TiTANiC hit an iCEBERG in the North Atlantic Ocean at 23:40, and sank during the following morning on the 15th of April, on the fourth day of its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City.

1932 : Loretta Lynn the American singer-songwriter was born in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky, USA.

1935 : The Black Sunday dust storm, one of the worst storms of the Dust Bowl, hit Oklahoma and Texas.

1941 : German and Italian forces attacked Tobruk in Libya, during World War 2.

1958 : Sputnik 2 the Soviet satellite fell from orbit after a 162 day mission. It was the first spacecraft to carry a living animal, which was a female dog named Laika that died on the 4th orbit due to overheating caused by the malfunction of the air conditioning.

1967 : Julia Zemiro the French-Australian television presenter was born in Aix-en-Provence, France. She is best known as the host of Rockwiz, a popular music quiz with live performances on Australian television.

1977 : Sarah Michelle Gellar the American actress was born in Long Island, New York, USA. She is best known internationally as Buffy Summers on Buffy the Vampire Slayer drama series on television from 1997 to 2003.

1981 : Space Shuttle Columbia completed its first test flight.

1986 : Simone de Beauvoir the French writer died of pneumonia aged 78 (born in 1908). She was also an existentialist philosopher, political activist, intellectual, feminist, and social theorist. 1995 : Burl Ives the American musician and actor died from oral cancer due to smoking, aged 85 (born in 1909).

2021 : BERNiE MADOFF the American convicted fraudster who ran the world’s largest Ponzi scheme died aged 82. He was once a chairman of the NASDAQ stock market before he was sentenced to 150 years in prison in 2009, for operating the largest financial fraud in history, worth approximately $64 billion (US dollars).
