1800s / 19th century history on the 13th of July

1863 : NEW YORK CiTY DRAFT RiOTS aka Manhattan draft riots started in Draft Week, with violent disturbances in Lower Manhattan, when new laws were passed by Congress in 1863 to draft men to fight in the American Civil War. The riots due to civil war conscription lasted for 3 days until the 16th July, resulting in the deaths of up to 120 people, and 2000 injured people. The riots remain the largest civil and most racially charged urban disturbance in the history of America.

1900s / 20th century history on the 13th of July

1919 : British airship R34 completed the 1st airship return journey across the Atlantic Ocean, when it landed in Norfolk, England, after a 182 hour flight.

1928 : Bob Crane the American actor was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, USA (died / murdered in 1978 aged 49). He was also a drummer, radio personality, and disc jockey. Bob Crane was best known as Colonel Robert Hogan in Hogan’s Heroes television series (1965 to 1971).

1942 : Harrison Ford the American actor was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

1956 : The 1st conference on artificial intelligence was held at Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, USA. The Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence project which was essentially an extended brainstorming session, went for up to 8 weeks.

1961 : Tim Watson the Australian footballer, coach, and journalist was born in Dimboola, Victoria.

1985 : LiVE AiD CONCERT officially opened by Prince Charles & Princess Diana at Wembley Stadium in London on the 13th July 1985. Live Aid was a worldwide rock concert organized to raise money for the relief of the famine-stricken in Africa. Live Aid continued at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, and other arenas around the world. The 16 hour superconcert was globally linked by satellite to over a billion viewers in 110 nations, raising over $125 million in famine relief for Africans. 2016 : David Cameron the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom resigned, and was succeeded by Theresa May.
