1868 : A massive earthquake near Arica, Peru, killed about 25,000 people, with a subsequent tsunami which caused damage as far away as Hawaii and New Zealand.
1898 : Carl Gustav Witt discovered 433 Eros, the first near-Earth asteroid discovered.
1899 : Sir Alfred Hitchcock, the English-American filmmaker, was born in Leytonstone, Essex, England (died in 1980 aged 80).

1918 : BMW – Bayerische Motoren Werke AG was established as a public company in Germany.
1926 : Fidel Castro, the 15th President of Cuba, was born Fidel Ruz, in Birán, Republic of Cuba (died in 2016 aged 90).
1942 : Bambi was released to theaters. it was Walt Disney’s 5th full length animated film.
1946 : H. G. Wells, the English writer, died of unspecified causes, aged 79 (born in 1866).

1952 : Herb Ritts, the American fashion photographer and director, was born in Los Angeles, California, USA (died in 2002 aged 50).
1954 : Radio Pakistan broadcasted the “Qaumī Tarāna”, the national anthem of Pakistan for the first time.
1958 : Feargal Sharkey (OBE) the Northern Irish singer-songwriter, was born Seán Feargal Sharkey.
1960 : The Central African Republic declared independence from France.
1961 : East Germany closed the border between the eastern and western sectors of Berlin to prevent inhabitants attempts to escape to the West.
1964 : The last people executed in the United Kingdom : Peter Allen and Gwynne Evans were the last people executed in the United Kingdom, when they were hung for the Murder of John Alan West.
1969 : The Apollo 11 astronauts were released from a 3 week quarantine for the ticker tape parade in New York, New York. That evening they are awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by U.S. President Richard Nixon, at a state dinner in Los Angeles, California.
1977 : Michael Klim, the Polish-Australian swimmer, was born Gdynia, Poland. He is a swimming Olympic gold medalist, world champion, and a swimming world record-holder during the 1990s and 2000s.

2004 : Hurricane Charley, a Category 4 storm, hit Punta Gorda, Florida, and devastated surrounding areas.
