1700s / 18th century history on the 10th of June

1752 : Benjamin Franklin flew a kite during a thunderstorm and collected a charge in a Leyden jar when the kite was struck by lightning, enabling him to demonstrate the electrical nature of lightning. Benjamin Franklin became interested in electricity in the 1740s, during a time when much was still unknown on the topic, and spent almost a decade conducting electrical experiments. He coined a number of terms used today, including battery, conductor and electrician. Benjamin Franklin also invented the lightning rod, used to protect buildings and ships.

1800s / 19th century history on the 10th of June

1886 : Mount Tarawera volcano erupted in New Zealand, killing over 120 people, and also buried the famous Pink and White Terraces. The volcanic eruptions continued for 3 months, which created a 17 km long fissures from northeast to southwest across the mountain peak.

1910 : Howlin’ Wolf the American musician was born Chester Arthur Burnett in White Station, Mississippi, USA (died in 1976 aged 65).

1921 : Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh was born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark in Mon Repos, Corfu, Greece (died in 2021 aged 99).

1922 : Judy Garland the American actress and singer was born Frances Ethel Gumm in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, USA (died in 1969 aged 47).

1928 : Maurice Sendak, American illustrator and writer was born in Brooklyn, New York, USA (died in 2012 aged 83).

1935 : Dr. Robert Smith had his last alcoholic drink, and founded Alcoholics Anonymous with Bill Wilson, in Akron, Ohio, USA.

1947 : Saab produced their first automobile.

1951 : Tony Mundine (OAM) the Australian boxer was born in Baryulgil, New South Wales, Australia.

1954 : Rich Hall the American comedian was born in Alexandria, Virginia, USA.

1961 : Maxi Priest the English singer was born Max Alfred Elliott in Lewisham, London, England. Official website : MaxiPriest.com

1971 : Kyle Sandilands the Australian radio host was born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Official website : KingKyle.com

1992 : Kate Upton the American model and actress was born in St. Joseph, Michigan, USA.

2000s / 21st century history on the 10th of June

2003 : The Spirit rover was launched by NASA for the Mars Exploration Rover mission.
