1856 : NiKOLA TESLA the Serbian-American physicist and engineer was born in Smiljan, Lika, in the Austrian Empire, which is present day Croatia (died in 1943 aged 86).
1869 : Gävle in Sweden, was largely destroyed in a fire, causing 80% of its 10,000 residents to become homeless.
1890 : WYOMiNG was admitted as the 44th U.S. state.

1913 : The highest temperature ever to be recorded on Earth was recorded in Death Valley, California, when it hit a high of 134 °F (57 °C).
1921 : Belfast’s Bloody Sunday: 16 people were killed and 161 houses destroyed during rioting and gun battles in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
1938 : Howard Hughes began his 91-hour airplane flight around the world which set a new record.
1943 : Arthur Ashe the American tennis player was born in Richmond, Virginia (died in 1993 aged 49).

1972 : Sofía Vergara the Colombian-American actress was born in Barranquilla, Columbia.

1985 : RAiNBOW WARRiOR the Greenpeace vessel was bombed and sunk in Auckland harbour by French DGSE agents, killing Fernando Pereira.
1985 : Aeroflot Tupolev Tu-154 crashed near Uchkuduk, Uzbekistan, after it stalled during flight. The crash killed all 200 people on board the aircraft, which made it the worst airline disaster in USSR.
1989 : Mel Blanc the American voice actor died aged 81 (born in 1908).

2002 : Peter Paul Rubens’ painting The Massacre of the Innocents was sold for £49.5 million (US$76.2 million) at a Sotheby’s auction, to Lord Thomson.
2005 : Hurricane Dennis hit the Florida Panhandle, causing billions of dollars in damage.
2007 : Erden Eruç began the 1st solo human-powered circumnavigation of the world.
2011 : Russian cruise ship Bulgaria sank in Volga near Syukeyevo, Tatarstan, causing the death of 122 people.
2015 : Omar Sharif the Egyptian actor died aged 83 (born in 1932).
2021 : Ashleigh Barty won the Wimbledon women’s singles final, which made her the first Australian woman to win the title since 1980 when Evonne Goolagong Cawley won, and the first top seed to win since 2016 when Serena Williams won.
