1497 : Amerigo Vespucci allegedly departed Cádiz in Spain for his first voyage to the New World aka Earth’s Western Hemisphere, specifically the Americas. The name of America was derived from Amerigo Vespucci’s name.

1500s / 16th century history on the 10th of May

1503 : Christopher Columbus visited the Cayman Islands and named them Las Tortugas, which was inspired by the many turtles seen there.

1534 : Jacques Cartier visited Newfoundland.
